Playa del Carmen has long welcomed chefs from around the world, and this time, one Australian’s open-fire proposal stood out. A look at what’s happening in the Riviera Maya today.
International chefs keep arriving in Playa del Carmen from every corner of the world: from Europe, with talent from Spain, France and Italy, to chefs from Japan, the United States and Argentina. During the years I lived there, I was always captivated by how they amazed all of us at the food festivals, whether hosted by U.S. hotel brands like Hyatt or at events like the Mayakoba festival. The most beautiful part is watching each of them bring a piece of their culture to Mexican cuisine, and the result is incredible.
An Australian in paradise
That's why it caught my attention to learn that an Australian chef had brought his talent to beautiful Playa del Carmen. Curtis Stone, whose Los Angeles restaurants have earned Michelin stars, leads Woodend by Curtis Stone at Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, which in 2026 was recognized by the MICHELIN Guide with the Exceptional Cocktails Award and honored by the Government of Quintana Roo. His signature is open-fire cooking, with seasonal dishes inspired by local farmers and fishermen.
Why his story matters
As a lifestyle journalist, I wanted to share his story because what he does is fascinating, and I wish him the very best, from the bottom of my heart. Playa del Carmen is a magical place that makes fusions like this possible, and it was just named Mexico & Central America's Leading City Break Destination 2026 by the World Travel Awards.
From here in the United States, I've noticed how much travelers love visiting the Riviera Maya, and how Playa del Carmen keeps gaining ground alongside Cancún. That's why talents like his deserve to be known.
At E Weekly News, we look forward to sharing his upcoming news, new creations and what's next at Woodend with our readers across Florida and the East Coast, an audience already planning its next escape to the Riviera Maya.
