Madrid from above: The 360º Rooftop Bar at Riu Plaza España

I’ve seen countless photos of people posing above Madrid from the very same spot: a glass walkway suspended over the city. It caught my attention so much that I wanted to learn more, so here are a few facts about this well-known place, the 360º Rooftop Bar, at the top of the Riu Plaza España, about 100 meters above Gran Vía.

An Icon With a Story

The hotel occupies the Edificio España, an architectural gem from the 1950s that was once one of the tallest skyscrapers in the country. In 2019, the Spanish hotel chain Riu turned it into a hotel, preserving its striking façade facing Plaza de España.

The Photo Everyone Wants

A glass walkway on the 27th floor that makes you feel like you’re walking on air. Unbelievable! The best time is sunset, when the sun goes down behind the Royal Palace. To skip the line, arrive around 11 a.m.

The Atmosphere

Relaxed by day, with cocktails and tapas in front of the view, and more festive by night. Travelers from around the world and locals from Madrid, in smart casual style.

Travel Notes

  • Where: Gran Vía, 84, Madrid, Spain. The rooftop entrance is on Calle Maestro Guerrero, behind the hotel’s main door.

  • Metro: Plaza de España (lines 2, 3 and 10).

  • Rooftop admission: from 5 euros on weekdays during the day, and 10 euros in the evening, on weekends and on holidays. Hotel guests enter free. Prices and hours may change, so it’s best to confirm them before you go.

  • My tip: book a table at El Edén for lunch or dinner. That way you can go up to the rooftop afterward, without waiting in line for the elevator.
