Runner: A race against time to save a life

If you love action but also want a good laugh, Runner has both, with the most unexpected duo of the year. From director Scott Waugh comes an action comedy where a tough guy and a partner who never stops talking share one mission: arrive in time to save a life.

The Story

Hank Malone (Alan Ritchson), a former Special Forces soldier, must deliver a transplant liver to the hospital where a little girl is waiting. A dangerous gang wants it back, and along the way he’s joined by Ben Bishop (Owen Wilson), a medical courier who never stops talking.

Action With an Ocean View

The movie was filmed in Australia and takes place between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, an area famous for its beaches. There’s even a chase that includes the Gold Coast tram.

The Duo That Makes the Movie

Alan Ritchson, known for the series Reacher, is the serious hero of few words. Owen Wilson is the complete opposite: chatty and charming. That mix is what makes the movie work, with jokes between one fight and the next. Rodrigo Santoro rounds out the cast as the gang’s leader, over the top and fun.

And here’s a detail I loved: the script was on the 2023 Black List, Hollywood’s list of the best screenplays not yet made into movies. Besides starring, Alan Ritchson is also one of the producers.

It’s one of those stories that reminds you the best company sometimes comes from the person you least expect.
