I really love this series, starting with its leads, the doctor and the schoolteacher, for their clever humor and for the everyday moments in which he helps the people of the town, while they, without even realizing it, teach him a different, better way to live.
The Story
Dr. Martin Best, a brilliant Boston surgeon, leaves the city to become the doctor of Port Wenn, a small fishing town in Maine, where he meets Louisa, the town's schoolteacher. As this city man adapts to small-town life, things happen that have always made me laugh. I relate to him, because I've also moved from cities to small towns and, even though they've been charming and incredible places, I know what it's like to start over somewhere so different. I'm sure more than one reader will see themselves in those scenes.
Maine, the Other Star
Although the series was filmed in New York's Hudson Valley, it captures the essence of Maine beautifully: harbor life and its famous lobster, rocky coastlines, lighthouses and forests that change with every season. That's why, when I watch it, I enjoy not only the story but also the scenery.
One place in Maine I'd love to visit is Portland, especially for its row of red brick buildings along the water. They're the old wharves and fishing industries, now turned into restaurants, shops and lofts. And up the hillside stretches Munjoy Hill, its charming residential neighborhood.
Behind the Scenes
Port Wenn isn't real: it's a fictional town. Its scenes were filmed in towns such as Cornwall, New Hamburg, Beacon and Hudson, with the Hudson River standing in for the bay. The series is based on the British show Doc Martin, and it has already been renewed for a second season.
